Preorders are live and November is right around the corner, yet Rockstar is pitching Grand Theft Auto 6 primarily as a singleplayer experience. Details about the game’s online component remain scarce, and the studio has kept much of the project under wraps. I’ve been playing Rockstar’s worlds since 1997 and never felt the series needed multiplayer—until GTA Online revealed new ways to play.

Its chaotic co-op modes and dedicated roleplaying communities are impressive, and GTAO is why people still play a 13-year-old game. The studio’s acquisition of Cfx.re, creators of FiveM, suggests it won’t abandon the online side. Releasing singleplayer first lets Rockstar focus on polishing one massive title and reduces the risk of launching a sprawling multiplayer platform at the same time.

That approach should lead to a smoother debut for GTA 6 and give the team time to gather feedback and refine any systems before rolling out GTA Online 2.
