Edward, 60, met Jane through a dating website 22 years ago. As the single father of a troubled teenager whose mother left when he was a child, he wasn’t looking for anything serious. Their first date felt pleasant but unremarkable, yet a call for another coffee after a day off led to a relationship he describes as a love that just keeps growing.

In the early years Jane offered him an escape from a stressful home life: walks, cafes and galleries, fantastic sex, then a return to ordinary routines—her as a single mum, him as a single dad. They moved in together after five years and married after 11. Now the children have grown and left home, intimacy can be spontaneous, and evenings sometimes end discarded when all they want is each other.

A couple of years ago Edward began to experience erectile dysfunction. He misses the physical connection of penetration, and it upsets him more than Jane, but it hasn’t affected their closeness and has pushed them to be more inventive.
