Watch Johnny Mnemonic before it leaves Netflix on June 30
Johnny Mnemonic (1995) is scheduled to leave Netflix on June 30. Keanu Reeves stars as a "data courier" who carries information on a hard drive implanted in his brain, a part that lets him play against his usual dependable, low-key persona. The job goes wrong when the data package proves larger than his brainware can handle.
Stranded in New Jersey with dead clients, no allies and an overloaded drive, Johnny has only days to download the information before fatal brain damage — or a squad of yakuza — ends him. He teams with cyborg mercenary Jane (Dina Meyer) to hunt for a black-market fix.
The film sits with other quietly dystopian '90s works like Total Recall and Strange Days, trading between scrupulously clean hotels and piles of industrial decay. Near the end Reeves delivers a gleeful, Cage-ian 90-second rant after an attack by the Street Preacher — a sequence that frequently resurfaces online.
