Warner Bros. Animation is moving forward with a movie based on ThunderCats. The project was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in Annecy, France. Premiering in 1985, ThunderCats followed a group of cat-like alien beings living on Third Earth as they clashed with the undead sorcerer Mumm‑Ra.

The show’s cast included leader Lion‑O, Panthro the engineer, the super-quick Cheetara, sidekick Snarf and others. There have been earlier development efforts for a ThunderCats film. In 2024 Adam Wingard said he was working on a live-action draft with Simon Barrett, but his next project became Onslaught, an original sci‑fi action film from A24.

The newly announced animated movie is likely a different effort, and it remains unclear if a live-action version is still moving forward. ThunderCats has often been compared to He‑Man and the Masters of the Universe — both dark fantasy shows with muscle-bound heroes, magic swords and popular toy lines that have been revived repeatedly.
