Vivienne and Knox's 18th birthdays mark close of Brangelina era
Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt will turn 18 on July 12, a milestone that also brings a decade-long legal and personal conflict between their parents, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, to a close. The couple split after Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016; they had been together for 12 years and were married for two.
When the twins reach adulthood, the residual custody agreement that gave Pitt visitation while Jolie had primary custody will end. Several of the children no longer use Pitt as a surname: Maddox filed to drop “Pitt” this week, Vivienne has informally removed the name in Playbill credits, and Shiloh made the change on her 18th birthday last year.
Jolie alleged an incident of physical and verbal abuse aboard a private jet in September 2016 and later sought related documents through an anonymous FOIA filing in April 2022, saying the event caused lasting trauma. Pitt has denied the allegations; child welfare services cleared him and the US Attorney declined to pursue charges.
