Viewsonic has unveiled a 24-inch 4K monitor, the VX24G26J-4K, whose panel measures 23.8 inches and has a native 3,840 by 2,160 resolution for a pixel density of 188 DPI. That sits well above the roughly 140 DPI of a 32-inch 4K monitor and the 163 DPI of a 27-inch 4K panel, though 27-inch 5K models such as the Asus ROG Strix XG27JCG still reach about 218 DPI.

The VX24G26J-4K is being pitched as a gaming monitor, with a 160 Hz refresh rate and a 1 ms response time. The higher pixel density will produce sharper images, but how noticeable those extra crispy visuals are in actual gameplay compared with a 27-inch 4K monitor remains debatable.

The smaller, sharper panel could appeal to users who want high-quality font rendering in a compact package. One intriguing possibility is a 1080p alt mode using pixel doubling and running at a much higher refresh rate, which would allow a 24-inch 1080p gaming panel to switch into a higher-resolution mode for day-to-day computing.
