Valve's new Steam Machine is now on sale but availability will be limited, and the starting price of $1,049 — controller not included — will put it out of reach for many. Valve's answer is simple: if you can't get or afford an official unit, you can build your own.

In an updated FAQ Valve says the openness of the PC platform offers many options for running games natively or streamed to a TV. With the newly released SteamOS 3.8, you can run the same code and operating system as the Steam Machine on a living-room PC using whatever PC parts you want.

Valve notes that, right now, only AMD GPUs are supported but it is working to expand compatibility and recommends PC sites and communities for help. There are questions about how a DIY box will match the official model, since Valve's machine uses semi-custom AMD CPU and GPU hardware and a Steam Machine Verified program.
