At Summer Game Fest I played two missions of Turok: Origins, Saber Interactive’s latest take on the dinosaur-shooting series. It’s a big, dumb shooter where you blast those goddamn things in the face, and oddly enough it left a strong impression. Turok: Origins is a co-op shooter for up to three players, with teammates squadding up to set out on linear missions full of dinosaurs and aliens.

The demo offered three classes — the tanky Bison, the DPS-focused Cougar, and the archer Raven — each with its own weapons and abilities. The Raven, for instance, comes equipped with a bow, a laser beam, a rocket launcher, and an ability that spits fireballs, while Cougar had a shotgun and a ground-slamming special attack.

The shooting leans into a casual arcade feel, with chunky shots and heavy impact. My first mission ended in a T-rex boss fight where a teammate used slowing orbs and shield barriers while I ran up and shot it in the face with a shotgun.
