Trump says US reached deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump said Sunday that the United States and Iran had reached a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. On TruthSocial he wrote, "The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade." Iran has not yet publicly confirmed the deal, and Trump did not immediately offer further details.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a mediator in the negotiations, said the official signing ceremony would be on June 19 and that pre-implementation discussions this week would lay the foundation for the technical talks and the signing. Negotiations over Iran's stores of uranium remain ongoing.
The Trump administration had sought assurances that Iran would stop enriching uranium, but it did not say whether that demand was part of the initial deal struck on Sunday.
