Treyarch announced on its official Twitter account that Mark Gordon will retire after 22 years with the studio, ten of those as studio head. The post said he would step down "to focus on his next chapter" and credited his impact across Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and Call of Duty 3, World at War, and the Black Ops series.

Gordon started in the industry as a programmer and joined Treyarch in 2005 as CTO, the same year the studio released its first Call of Duty game, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. He became studio head in 2016 alongside Dan Bunting and Jason Blundell. Blundell departed in 2020 to found the since-shuttered Deviation Games, and Bunting left in 2021 following a Wall Street Journal investigation into a sexual harassment claim filed against him years earlier.

Gordon remained the sole studio head through the releases of Call of Duty: Vanguard, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7, all of which Treyarch either co-developed directly or supported.
