Tracy Morgan proclaims Jalen Brunson 'King of New York'
Tracy Morgan, 57, said he would not single out a favorite Knicks player but crowned MVP Jalen Brunson the “King of New York” less than 48 hours after the Knicks won the NBA Finals, 4-1, against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night.
He likened Brunson to a Ghostbuster and began singing the 1984 movie’s theme: “There’s something strange in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call? Jalen Brunson!”
“I broke down a lot,” Morgan said, adding that others did too. “Fifty-three years [the last time the Knicks won the championship was in 1973], everyone let it all out, everyone felt joyful, they were tears of joy.”
Morgan called the victory a turning point for the city — “the curse is over” and “this is the first time in a long time that I’ve really seen the city happy,” noting New Yorkers have been through 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic. He demurred at being called a superfan — “The superfans are the ones sitting way up there” — and said he hopes to join the victory parade with his family.
