Toys for Bob said it returned to Spyro rather than tackle another Microsoft platformer. Lou Studdert, associate creative director on Spyro: A Realm Beyond, said Spyro 'has kind of a deep place in our studio's heart,' citing the studio's work on Skylanders and the Reignited Trilogy.

'We always admired that kind of small but mighty underdog story... it just was a no-brainer.' Studdert added that 'since we made Reignited, we have had the hope to take him further' and that 'we always wanted to return to the world of Spyro, to bring that character forward, and so time was right, and we left it to chance.' Paul Yan, studio head, said going independent was risky but noted Reignited sold 'over 11 million copies', showing there was an audience.
