'Toy Story 5' crushes the box office on opening weekend
Pixar's 'Toy Story 5' opened in theaters on June 19 and dominated the worldwide box office. The film earned an estimated $160 million domestically and $152 million internationally, for a global total of about $312 million. Its opening outpaced Universal's 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' ($131 million) and topped the franchise's previous debut, 'Toy Story 4' ($120 million); Disney called it the second-highest animated opening weekend ever, behind 'Incredibles 2.' Directed by Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris, the movie reunites many original voices — Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie — with returns from John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, and Annie Potts.
New additions include Greta Lee as Lilypad, along with Keanu Reeves, Bad Bunny, and Conan O'Brien. Rather than another human or rival toy, this installment pits the gang against technology.
