Toy Story 5 nods to a 31-year Buzz Lightyear plot hole

For 31 years one question has nagged fans of the original Toy Story: Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, believes he is a real space ranger yet freezes whenever a human appears. Toy Story 5 opens with a group of new, upgraded Buzz figures washed ashore on a deserted island.

They spot the North Star, identify it as Star Command, build a raft and make their way to a shipping yard. As a dockworker approaches all of the Buzzes collapse into inactive toy mode; when he leaves they rise again, one asking, "Why did we freeze?" and another replying, "Fascinating." The scene moves on and is never really addressed again.
