Tottenham Hotspur have identified Marcus Rashford as their main summer target and are exploring a formal offer for the Manchester United forward, who is currently starring for England at the World Cup. The club have already signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m, completed free transfers for Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi, and placed an £80m bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali.

United and Rashford have agreed a £40m release clause for this summer, but Tottenham are reportedly unwilling to meet that specific figure and are considering a lower opening offer to test whether United will negotiate. Rashford’s preference is to move abroad again or to return to United and reintegrate into the senior squad, with a switch to another Premier League club not currently on his radar.

United, however, are keen to move the forward on to ease the burden of his wages and have ruled out engaging Barcelona over another loan after the Spanish club did not activate a £26m option to make his stay permanent.
