Tottenham ready to break transfer record for Sandro Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a record transfer bid for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi viewing the Italian as the midfield anchor needed after a difficult spell that included three different managers. Ownership, the Lewis family, have pledged to back De Zerbi’s rebuild.
Spurs are reportedly willing to offer between £80m and £85m plus performance-related add-ons, which would eclipse their 2019 club record of £55m for Tanguy Ndombele. Newcastle are seeking closer to £100m, though Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s Squad Cost Rules may force negotiation; the Magpies have already sanctioned Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona to help balance the books.
Manchester United have cooled their interest, leaving Arsenal and Manchester City among the other suitors, but Tottenham hope the chance to be De Zerbi’s focal point will appeal to Tonali. No official bid has been lodged, though talks are said to be constructive with the player’s camp.
