A lead developer says Final Fantasy Resonance was created because the mobile game it’s based on was "too good to become unplayable." Producer Keisuke Nakashima says the project began as a simple pitch shared at the end of 2020. Nakashima previously worked on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and wanted to show its strengths to a wider audience.

He highlights features drawn from the mainline series — airships, Chocobos and secret treasure chests — and felt the game deserved more recognition. Square Enix ended service for Brave Exvius last year, leaving it unplayable on mobile. Nakashima said he was frustrated that many players dismissed the title simply because it was a mobile app, and that frustration helped drive development of a console version.

Final Fantasy Resonance is due later this year and is being made by the team behind Octopath Traveler, using the HD-2D art style.
