Tom Holland told Empire he would like to "pop up" in an R-rated take on Spider-Man, suggesting he could appear in one of The Punisher's shows. "Let's see what an R-rated version of Spider-Man looks like," he said, and added he was "so grateful for Jon for taking the leap and being a part of the film, and I would love to repay the favor." That possibility runs up against a firm contractual boundary: the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures only allows Holland's Spider-Man to appear in MCU films.

The restriction helps explain the lack of direct references to Spider-Man in live-action Disney+ series, apart from Kingpin's vague "man dressed up as a spider" line in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. Holland can appear in animated projects such as What... If?, but those episodes must be kept under 30 minutes, and Peter Parker cannot turn up in live-action television—hence Spider-Noir used Ben Reilly instead.
