Tom Holland said he persuaded Sony to delay filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day so he could star in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, recalling “a very uncomfortable conversation” with Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman last summer. He attributed Sony’s willingness to move the schedule in part to Nolan’s reputation that a production won’t overrun and that Holland wouldn’t be unavailable for years.

The Odyssey, in which Holland plays Telemachus, began production on time and wrapped nine days early; Holland immediately shot his latest Spider-Man sequel afterward. He added that the delay gave director Destin Daniel Cretton time to join the superhero project and that the change “saved” the Marvel/Sony movie.

“I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any ‘Spider-Man’ movie going,” he said. Comparing Nolan to his Marvel experience, Holland said, “his level of preparation is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” and praised the director’s clarity on set.
