At Unreal Fest 2026 in Chicago, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney presented Unreal Engine 6 as an alternative to a gaming ecosystem dominated by closed platforms like Roblox. He framed the pitch around helping developers confront a shifting market where social experiences and attention competition are reshaping play.

Sweeney warned that traditional AAA gaming faces a “time of both crisis and opportunity,” saying, “We’re seeing often hundreds of millions of dollars of dev costs followed by tens of millions of dollars of revenue.” He added that development costs keep rising and “it feels to many like a tidal wave is sweeping over the AAA game business.” Despite laying off 1,000 of his employees earlier this year, Sweeney said Fortnite is thriving again and similar games are well placed to compete.

He pointed to a change in the economy from buying games to buying things in games, and called the war for attention the final threat to conventional models.
