Tim Allen said a possible Home Improvement reboot has not moved forward because "they get stuck" over what he called "personality problems right now with the boys." He added that the actors who played his on-screen sons — Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Taran Noah Smith — have "their own issues." Allen said he had always thought it would be interesting if the new series focused on the three Taylor sons, but called that idea "a little challenging right now, to put it mildly." Home Improvement originally aired on ABC from 1991 to 1999, with Allen as Tim Taylor, Patricia Richardson as Jill and Bryan, Thomas and Smith as the couple’s children.

Bryan has faced legal problems: he was sentenced to 16 months in a California jail in February for a 2024 DUI arrest and in March received a 19-month prison sentence in Oregon for violating his domestic violence probation.
