Home Improvement was one of the most-watched family sitcoms during its ABC run from 1991 to 1999, with the final episode drawing an estimated 55 million viewers. Despite that success, fatigue and financial disagreements behind the scenes ended the series after eight seasons.

Tim Allen has explored reviving the show, potentially centering a new series on the grown-up Taylor children, but he says the project is "stuck" because of what he called "some personality problems right now with the boys." The actors who played Brad, Randy and Mark have largely stepped away from Hollywood.

Zachery Ty Bryan, who played the eldest son Brad, has been arrested multiple times and is currently serving a 16-month sentence for a felony DUI, followed by a consecutive 19-month prison term for probation violations tied to domestic violence charges. Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the middle son Randy, has mostly retired from acting apart from a 2015 guest role on Allen's Last Man Standing and reportedly has no interest in returning.
