FIFA has handed South Africa attacking midfielder Themba Zwane a three-match suspension following his red card in the opening 2026 World Cup defeat to Mexico, ruling him out for the rest of the group stage. The 36-year-old veteran's absence is a major setback for coach Hugo Broos and his squad.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee increased an initial one-match ban to three matches, a decision that remains subject to appeal. Zwane was introduced in the 61st minute at the Azteca Stadium on June 11 but was sent off after 23 minutes following a VAR review in the 84th minute; the referee dismissed him for illegally raising his arm against Roberto Alvarado, an act the governing body deemed serious foul play and which attracted two additional matches on top of the automatic suspension for a straight red.

Before his dismissal Zwane registered just eight touches, completed five passes and failed to win any ground duels.
