The Testaments Is a Perfect Weekend Binge
The Testaments, a dystopian drama adapted from Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel, has quickly become a streaming hit, even outperforming Marvel and Star Wars titles on Disney+ charts since its debut. Season 1 premiered April 8, 2026 on Hulu and the series has already been renewed for a second season.
The show follows Agnes (Chase Infiniti) as she quietly begins to question her past, while characters such as Daisy (Lucy Halliday) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) drive a story that reworks several plotlines from the book. In the novel Lydia's manuscript frames the fall of Gilead; the series follows a similar trajectory but makes its own choices about who is connected to whom.
More subdued and slow-burning than The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments plays like a coming-of-age story set against an oppressive regime. The deliberate pace and restrained handling of the material lend a realistic feel, punctuated by a few shocking moments near the end of Season 1 and an almost narrated, book-like atmosphere.
