The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crosses $1 billion worldwide
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has crossed $1 billion at the global box office ten weeks into its theatrical run. The animated sequel from Nintendo and Illumination opened strongly, grossing $190.1 million in the United States during its first five days in April.
It still trails its predecessor—2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $1.36 billion worldwide—but Box Office Mojo lists Galaxy as the top-grossing film of 2026. In recent weeks the film's ability to reach a billion during its theatrical run had looked uncertain.
The financial success all but guarantees another Super Mario entry. Nintendo and Illumination have an untitled project on the 2028 calendar that could be a direct sequel; with Galaxy expanding the cast to include characters like Star Fox's Fox McCloud and Pikmin, the companies might pursue spinoffs or stand-alone character films next.
