HBO's The Outsider, now streaming on Max, opens with the murder of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson in the small Georgia town of Cherokee City. Evidence points to Little League coach Terry Maitland, even as Terry insists he was at an out-of-town conference with surveillance footage to back him up; before the contradiction can be resolved, Terry is killed at the courthouse and detective Ralph Anderson is left chasing the impossible idea that one man could be in two places at once.

Private investigator Holly Gibney is brought in for her skill with strange, unsettling cases. The truth revealed by Holly is that a shape-shifting entity known as El Cuco took Terry’s face to commit the murder and then fed on the Peterson family as they were killed one by one.

El Cuco also seizes influence over local cop Jack Hoskins, turning him into a coerced servant who does its bidding, which sets the story on a violent, tragic course.
