The Newsroom Still Feels Timely
Aaron Sorkin created and wrote every episode of The Newsroom after establishing himself with The West Wing and The Social Network, and ahead of his upcoming film The Social Reckoning. The HBO series opens with anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) facing fallout from a contentious Northwestern University speech, then broadens into a story about journalism in practice.
Beyond its newsroom setups, the show explores politics, personal relationships and mental health, with Will's on-again, off-again relationship with Mac Morgan McHale (Emily Mortimer) a recurring thread. The series keeps a brisk pace as characters juggle big stories, ambitions and interpersonal drama.
The cast includes Sam Waterston and Olivia Munn, with appearances by Constance Zimmer, Hamish Linklater, David Harbour and Jane Fonda.
