The Nevers blends Victorian fantasy and superhero drama
The Nevers, created by Joss Whedon, reimagines a Victorian London where a group known as the Touched develop superhuman abilities. Centered on Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), who runs an orphanage for Touched children and can see the future, the series mixes period detail with genre elements in a way that rewards a weekend binge, despite running for only a single season.
Often likened to a Victorian‑era X‑Men, the show places prejudice at the heart of its conflicts: many of the Touched are women or people of color and must fight a society that fears them. The cast includes comic‑book‑sized figures such as the Beggar King (Nick Frost), the scientist Hague (Denis O'Hare), and the serial killer Maladie (Amy Manson).
Whedon framed the title as a reclaiming of a slur — taking something negative and wearing it like a badge of honor. Midway through the season the series takes a surprising turn, revealing that the Touched arrived after an alien visitation and that those aliens can travel into the past.
