There’s comfort in a show that embraces the familiar beats of fantasy rather than trying to reinvent them. The Legend of Vox Machina leans into monsters, sinister wizards, and a ragtag band of heroes who pull together when it matters most, and in doing so delivers the most accurate depiction of Dungeons & Dragons on television.

Born from Critical Role’s original campaign, the animated series captures that mix of chaotic shenanigans and epic storytelling, translating a sprawling play campaign into a sleeker, more linear narrative. Season 4 opens after a one-year time skip that scatters the group before reuniting them.

Vax and Keyleth set out to complete her aramente, Vex and Percy help rebuild Whitestone, and Grog and Pike remain together — though Pike begins the season feeling sidelined while Grog revels in song and drink. Scanlan has stepped away to focus on music and mending his relationship with his daughter.
