Backrooms is currently at the top of the box office, and 20-year-old director Kane “Pixels” Parsons is already moving toward a follow-up. Per Deadline, he is actively looking for a “screenwriting collaborator” to develop the next movie, presumably buoyed by an opening weekend that saw the film gross $118 million worldwide.

That search suggests Parsons may not be planning to reteam with the first film’s writer, Will Soodik. Soodik's sparse credits include one episode each of Homeland, Borgia and Westworld, and ten episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead; he has also co-written Egor Abramenko’s upcoming horror film Altar and is attached to the director’s next project, God’s Country.

Roberto Patino, who was originally set to pen Backrooms and is currently writing the Assassin’s Creed movie, also appears unavailable. Some observers worry that jumping straight into another Backrooms film could pigeonhole Parsons as “the Backrooms guy,” a fate that has befallen other breakout horror directors.
