Xbox has announced another price increase for its consoles, with 512 MB models rising $100 and 1 TB models jumping $150. The company said the price of computer storage and memory continue to rise, making this the second increase in the last eight months. To ease the hit for buyers, Xbox said it will revamp its Buy Now Pay Later program so consoles can be paid for in chunks, and that Amazon will offer 0 percent APR financing on purchases.

Reaction on social media was swift and negative. Some pointed out the timing with GTA VI preorders and argued there’s a business case for trying to squeeze as much money out of consumers as possible; others summed up the response in a nod to Fallout 4: “Everybody disliked that.” One commenter added that if you keep raising hardware prices you need to “find SOME way to raise the value proposition too,” and warned that closing studios won’t help.

Critics also noted that while Xbox blamed rising memory costs, it did not acknowledge Microsoft’s pursuit of generative AI as a factor.
