Ridley Scott's next film, The Dog Stars, is a post-apocalyptic survival story that opens in theaters on Aug. 28. The latest trailer paints desolate vistas and stages gunfights against Mad Max–style raiders. Jacob Elordi stars as Hig, a pilot hunting the origin of a mysterious radio broadcast after a pandemic wipes out much of humanity.

Josh Brolin plays Bangley, an ex-Marine and Hig’s companion, while Margaret Qualley appears as the medic Cima. Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong and Allison Janney round out the principal cast. The film adapts Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, with Mark L. Smith — whose credits include Twisters and The Revenant — on the screenplay.

Erik Messerschmidt serves as cinematographer and Harry Gregson-Williams is composing the score. Given recent events, pandemic-centered fiction carries a different tenor, and the trailer’s overgrown cities and rugged survivors invite comparison with The Last of Us and its HBO adaptation.
