The Doctor's Line in 'Latent Image' Hits Harder Than Any Sci‑Fi Quote

I've watched Star Trek: Voyager more times than I can count, and yet Robert Picardo's Doctor still delivers lines that stop me in my tracks. His journey from automated medical subroutines to a thinking, feeling artificial being is one of the show's throughlines, and a single moment in Season 5, Episode 11, "Latent Image" encapsulates it.

In "Latent Image" the Doctor examines Ensign Harry Kim and finds evidence of a surgical procedure he clearly performed but cannot remember. He learns his memory of the operation was erased; when Captain Janeway restores it she discovers he had to choose between two patients with equal chances of survival and chose Harry, the crew member he was closer to.

The clash between his original objective programming and his newer human-tinged subroutines leads to an emotional meltdown, voiced in the outburst: "Doctor? Hardly! A doctor retains his objectivity. I didn't do that, did I? Two patients, equal chances of survival and I chose the one I was closer to?
