The Alters: Last Variable DLC revealed with 20-hour campaign

11 Bit Studios announced a major expansion for The Alters during Saturday's Future Games Show. Titled The Alters: Last Variable, it takes place after the main game and follows Jan Scientist, who chose to stay behind to explore a fertile area called the Oasis. New scientifically inclined alters — the Geologist, Biologist, Chemist and Physicist — join Jan Scientist as you work to terraform parts of the planet, which in turn creates new resources and new threats.

The announcement also describes a Cryosleep Chamber that lets Jan Scientist sleep through dangers while other alters continue to work and grow old. Last Variable offers a roughly 20-hour campaign, compared with the base game's roughly 25-hour runtime, and will be accessible from the start menu without an end-game save file.

Players are advised to play some of the base game first, since Last Variable does not include tutorials for already established mechanics.
