Tethergeist from O. and Co. Games and Out of Space Games came out last month. It follows Mae, a girl in a community where everyone can astral project; her projected form is tethered to her body, which shapes the coming-of-age pilgrimage she undertakes on foot. The tether creates the game’s core puzzles.

Mae’s body can’t pass through thorns or crystal while her spirit can, and projecting through an obstacle yanks the body to the other side when meditation ends. Beginning a projection midair makes the body drift downward, so many platforming moments hinge on jumping, projecting around hazards, and releasing before landing in spikes or moving too far from the spirit.

New mechanics arrive steadily: yellow flowers must be collected to astral-project, some platforms move only while projecting, Mae can wall-kick, red energy stops projection unless the spirit is already passing through, spikes may appear only during projection, and there are mushrooms and jellyfish that bounce or launch both body and spirit.
