Ten Years On, Forsaken Remains a Solid, Old-School Western
Jon Cassar’s western Forsaken follows John Henry Clayton (Kiefer Sutherland), a former gunfighter who returns home seeking redemption and reconciliation. He finds an old love, a ruthless land baron and his estranged father waiting — and the film, now ten years on Prime Video, remains well regarded by critics and audiences.
The casting of real-life father and son Donald and Kiefer Sutherland is often cited as a key strength. The film embraces familiar western beats rather than trying to reinvent them. Clayton hopes to leave violence behind to appease his preacher father, but a railroad’s arrival and James McCurdy’s ruthless campaign to seize property force him back into conflict.
As McCurdy and his gang turn to violence, Clayton’s past catches up with him. Performances keep the picture grounded. Demi Moore’s brief turn as Mary Alice Watson is modest and quietly haunting, a past love whose presence lingers, while Brian Cox provides a menacing counterpoint that gives the town’s threat a palpable edge.
