Ted McGinley says many of his TV residual checks are one penny
Ted McGinley, 67, says he has a “whole stack” of residual checks, many made out for the grand total of one penny. He earned those puny checks for roles on shows such as “Happy Days,” “The Love Boat” and, most notably, as Jefferson D’Arcy on seven seasons of “Married with Children.” McGinley explained in a recent interview that residuals “step down, eventually, it doesn’t become that much.” He keeps the stack of checks at home but admits he doesn’t bother cashing the penny ones and isn’t above tossing small amounts.
“I’d say about $2,” he said with a laugh when estimating the smallest amount he’ll deposit, later exclaiming, “$1.89, it’s going on!” McGinley noted that his years working in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s mean “I’ve been getting residuals all the time.” He can currently be seen in the Apple+ series “Shrinking,” opposite Harrison Ford.
“I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I [would] get this shot,” he shared, calling the experience “amazing.” He praised Ford as kind and someone who “sets you at ease.
