Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo: friendship timeline and feud rumors
Olivia Rodrigo long admired Taylor Swift, and early in Rodrigo’s career the pair struck a warm rapport. Swift publicly praised Rodrigo’s performances, celebrated her early wins, and the singers met and posed for photos at the 2021 Brit Awards. Their public exchanges began in April 2020, when Rodrigo posted a cover of Swift’s “Cruel Summer” and Swift reposted it, writing “THE TALENT.
Love This!!!” Rodrigo later recalled in all caps that “TAYLOR SWIFT IS THE REASON I WRITE SONGS.” In January 2021, after “Drivers License” surged on the charts, Swift commented, “I say that’s my baby and I’m proud.” A few months later Rodrigo said Swift sent her a ring with a handwritten note.
As Rodrigo’s debut album Sour took off, song credits and retroactive interpolations complicated the picture. The album’s track “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” credits Swift and Jack Antonoff for an interpolation of “New Year’s Day,” and production credits on “Deja Vu” were later updated to include Swift, Antonoff, and Annie Clark.
