Opposition leader Angus Taylor dismissed the government’s proposed carve-outs to capital gains tax reform, calling the changes "abject failure" and a "half-arsed carve-up." The concessions would exempt all of Australia’s 2.7m small businesses, along with startups and testamentary trusts, from the move to an inflation-linked approach.

A 12-year-old boy died after a single-vehicle crash in Stratford, in the northern suburbs of Cairns, when a grey Toyota Fortuner reportedly left the road and rolled at about 4.15am. Police said the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Mooroobool address around 3am; two men aged 20 and 22 and a 19-year-old woman were taken to Cairns hospital.

Authorities confirmed the first mainland case of H5N1 bird flu after a brown skua found unwell at Cape Le Grand national park near Esperance died from the virus. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young warned the outbreak could be "one of the biggest domestic crises since Covid" and supported calls for a $200m emergency response fund to protect native wildlife.
