Taylor Sheridan has long built stories around characters who live in moral grey areas, from Sicario and Hell or High Water to television like Landman and Tulsa King. The Jeremy Renner–starring Mayor of Kingstown offers a clear example: Mike McLusky works as a mediator in a small Michigan town, coordinating between cops and criminals to try to keep the peace while revealing the compromises and desperation that drive much of the crime shown on screen.

Sheridan and Tom Nelson have now published How to Not Die in Prison: A Survival Guide, a practical handbook that promises tips and strategies for surviving time behind bars. The advice draws on Nelson’s real-life experience; his author biography notes he "has been busted for everything from auto theft and assault and battery to armed robbery and drug dealing.

He spent more than seventeen years as an inmate in maximum- and medium-security prisons.
