Quentin Tarantino wrote a sharply critical essay in Sight and Sound, saying it is "almost impossible" for him to watch contemporary films without picking them "to death." He accused the current industry of producing work from a "flavorless sausage factory," arguing that audience pandering and other failings have left him preferring to read a book rather than sit through most new releases.

Still, the director allowed for exceptions. He listed a few recent films he liked, then singled out Joe Carnahan's Netflix crime thriller The Rip, calling it "sensational" and saying it had "the whole package." Tarantino praised specific elements of the film: Carnahan's direction, the "splendid cast," the look provided by cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz, and the screenplay by Carnahan and Michael McGrale as the project’s powerhouse component.

The Rip, which debuted on Netflix in January, follows a Miami narcotics unit whose trust collapses after they find $20 million in cartel cash.
