Mourinho hails Messi's World Cup, vows to take a national job one day
José Mourinho said he was delighted Lionel Messi finally won a World Cup, the one major trophy that had eluded him. Messi led Argentina to global glory in Qatar in 2022, scoring seven goals and winning the Golden Ball. Reflecting on that tournament, Mourinho said: "The Messi World Cup [in 2022]...
believe in Football Gods, because the guy couldn't have the career [he's had] without winning it. So you have that feeling that there is something superior that made a guy win a World Cup." He also revisited other World Cup memories, from watching the 1970 final with his father to Maradona's moments in Mexico 1986 and Brazil's attacking trio of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho in 2002.
"I have so many memories in World Cups where you say: 'Wow'," Mourinho said, adding he was a Maradona fan and recalling the goals against Belgium and England. Despite nearly three decades managing top clubs, Mourinho has not yet taken charge of a national side.
