Taliesin Jaffe resolves a major Critical Role Campaign 4 mystery
This article contains major spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 4 episode 29, “Opening Night.” Since the campaign's October 2025 debut, Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has introduced many unanswered questions, but one of the longest-running mysteries was clarified in the latest episode by cast member Taliesin Jaffe.
From the moment Bolaire Lathalia appeared, the mask around his face felt like a puzzle. The reveal that Bolaire is himself a living artifact — one of several masks forged during the Shapers War to slay the halfling god Rauwyn — explained his history of possession, his participation in past conflicts, and why a play inspired him to seek a life beyond war.
Previously, Bolaire had taken over only NPCs, usually ones who were dead or unconscious, and even then he had to contest their souls to maintain control. Episodes 28 and 29 changed that pattern.
