Nintendo released firmware version 22.5.0 for the original Switch and the Switch 2, and the biggest change for the first console is a redesigned Nintendo eShop layout. The Switch 2 side of the patch notes is quieter compared with the earlier Handheld Boost Mode update, while the eShop redesign is the headline for Switch 1 users.

The update moves the eShop away from the old web-based approach and makes it behave more like the built-in app on the Switch 2. That change, along with the addition of dark mode when the console is set that way, has users reporting much faster loading than at any point in the console’s nearly ten-year life.

The refresh improves performance but does not address the eShop’s content‑quality problems. Low-effort shovelware, AI-generated junk and borderline pornographic titles still clutter the storefront, and Nintendo’s interface continues to struggle to surface games that deserve attention over cash-grab releases.
