Final Fantasy Resonance, revealed during the Nintendo showcase, is the series' first HD-2D game — the style that layers 2D sprites over three-dimensional planes. The turn-based JRPG was described as a looker at the reveal. It isn't a Switch 2 exclusive: the game is also coming to PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox, and the original Switch.

A game like this, with its pixel-art charm, feels especially suited to portable play. Square Enix framed the concept by asking, "What if Final Fantasy had continued to evolve while remaining pixel art…" and said "a story revolving around crystals is depicted in high-definition pixel art." The title pulls in series protagonists such as Cloud Strife, Noctis, and Lightning and is scheduled for release on Oct.

22, 2026.
