Surprise updates have polished Path of Exile 2 into a juggernaut
Grinding Gear Games has kept releasing substantial patches for Path of Exile 2 even after saying the most recent expansion would be its last before the game leaves early access. In recent weeks the developer added an entire skill tree for a side activity and a major overhaul to Unique items, unlocking many new ways to play through the campaign.
I tried the debut version a year and a half ago and wasn’t convinced it would pull me away from Diablo 4 — its stingy loot drops and abrasive complexity felt off-putting. The latest expansions, though, have hooked me; I’m now seriously considering skipping the next Diablo 4 season to keep playing PoE 2.
Return of the Ancients clarified the game’s vision. Like my favorite FromSoftware titles, PoE 2 sticks to its core pillars: you remain an underdog for much of the campaign, scavenging small advantages, and that tension carries into the endgame as Wraeclast reveals tougher challenges and secrets.
