If you’ve seen trailers for the second Supergirl movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe, you know it sets up a revenge plot: Kara races to save her superpowered dog Krypto after he’s poisoned by Krem of the Yellow Hills, leader of a space pirate gang called the Brigands.

Krypto’s poisoning is the film’s inciting incident, though the dog gets less screen time than his importance might suggest. Early scenes show Kara and Krypto partying and barhopping on planets without yellow suns, so she can feel the effects of alcohol; things shift when Krem steals her ship and Krypto, trying to stop the pirates, is hit with a poisoned dart.

The shooting itself is brief and easy to look away from, but the sequence of Krypto suffering at a healer stretches out. The healer explains that the Brigands use slow-acting poison as an interrogation tactic, carrying the antidote so they can trade it for information.
