Director: Supergirl's divisive needle drop was debated until the final week
Director Craig Gillespie says debates over Supergirl's needle drop continued to the very last week. The contested moment in the film's final act uses a Kelty Greye cover of 'The Middle' by Jimmy Eat World, slowed to a tempo many viewers felt clashed with the scene and the film as a whole.
Writer Ana Nogueira noted there were a lot of options, and Gillespie recalled "about 45 songs" were considered for that beat. He called the choice "probably the biggest discussion," and said James Gunn made the final decision; a "remix of a classic" was a runner-up but not identified.
Kelty Greye marked the placement on Instagram, describing it as a "dream come true." Gunn is known for prominent pop and rock selections in his work — from Guardians of the Galaxy's '80s-heavy mixes to Peacemaker's memorable theme moments — and some viewers have reacted negatively to this instance.
