Supergirl director on adapting Woman of Tomorrow
When DC Studios first announced the Supergirl movie, its official title was Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a clear signal that the film would adapt the 2022 comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. After the title was shortened to Supergirl, many assumed the movie would draw heavily from King's galaxy-spanning, revenge-fueled saga and Evely's surreal, cosmic artwork.
Director Craig Gillespie says he "very deliberately started with the script that Ana wrote," leaning on a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, a playwright and actor making her feature screenwriting debut and said to be working on upcoming Teen Titans and Wonder Woman movies for the DCU.
"I put together a lot of visuals around that coming from the script, trying to make something that I would be excited about and that had this grit and flavor of the Supergirl character, Kara," he says. Gillespie adds that he did eventually revisit Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow and borrowed some visuals from Bilquis Evely's work.
