The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Becomes 2026's First $1 Billion Film
After two months in theaters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become the first film of 2026 to cross $1 billion at the global box office. The Universal Pictures sequel continues to play in some cinemas even as it has been released digitally. The film has earned $428.5 million domestically and $571.5 million internationally, pushing its worldwide total past the $1 billion mark.
It is now the second most successful video game adaptation ever, behind the 2023 original that grossed $1.3 billion, and currently stands as the highest-grossing movie of the year — a position that could change with Toy Story 5 arriving on June 19. Most characters return, with Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Chris Pratt reprising roles, while Brie Larson, Donald Glover and Benny Safdie join the cast.
Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong is noticeably absent, and rumors suggest a spin-off centered on the character could be in development; it remains early to tell if that will be the 2028 project from Universal and Illumination.
